What is Sustainable Design?

Sustainability is one of the most used yet least understood words in our business vocabulary. To many, if it’s “green” and “recycled,” it must be “sustainable.” Yet, this narrow definition merely hints at the impact that sustainable design can have on any enterprise.

 

Sustainability is an approach to thinking and creating that encompasses far more than reducing environmental impact. It ensures that we and our planet continue to thrive for generations. To become truly sustainable, we must approach the world in a different light and be willing to make the changes necessary to accomplish this vision.

Sustainable designers bring a broad and deep perspective to every design challenge. Sustainable design is an emerging methodology that uses a whole systems-based and life cycle thinking approach to understand a particular issue or problem before attempting to solve it. Sustainable design can be applied to a product, a package, a service system, a policy initiative, or a marketing campaign, to name a few. It aims to consider the social, and financial impacts of a project as well as the environmental ones.

 

The true promise of sustainable design lies in its potential to optimize how we use all our resources – from raw materials to people to packaging – to create competitive advantage, reduce risk, increase profit, build enduring organizations and contribute to the ongoing health of our world.

Our Services

Sustainability strategies can be implemented as part of a new business or product launch or incrementally over a longer period for an established organization. Meaningful relationships and collaboration is a key driver to innovation and success. When appropriate, we team with a variety of organizations and businesses that share a commitment of sustainability in all aspects of a multi-stakeholder project.
